Singapore: Gardens by the Bay

The Lion City was celebrating its 50’th Founding Anniversary. Because of these, all kinds of festivities are planned all over the cities from bands playing music in schools to productions, theater and cultural celebrations all over the city. The other day, we went to a crowded Singapore Art Museum in Bas Basah. Today we will be going to the Gardens by the Bay.

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore is a nature park in Singapore across a span of 101 hectares that includes three themed gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The complex is part of Singapore’s strategy to transform Singapore into the most beautiful “Garden City”.

By 2006, an international competition was held for the design of the park from architects to landscape designers. The contracts were awarded to Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter.

Singapore’s “supertrees” are man-made tree-like structures that dominate the Gardens by the Bay. They range between 25-50 meter high. The Supertrees are like giant trees where different exotic ferns, vines, orchids grow on. It contains a vast collection of bromeliads. The trees are installed with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees – photovoltaic cells that harness solar energy which can be used for some of the functions of the Supertrees, such as lighting, just like how trees photosynthesize; and collection of rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays, exactly like how trees absorb rainwater for growth. During night time, artificial trees come alive with a light and music show called the OCBC Garden Rhapsody.
