Being there for Me

Learning to learn to understand and listen to yourself
Self Realization is a sign of maturity

Self realization.

For decades now, something is wrong in my experience of church. There’s a weird factor that is messing up the results in my life. What i know is that the bad habits I want to change are invisible when I’m in church.

I can see that church, the bible and God is my excuse why I cannot live the goals I set for myself.

Can We Eat to STARVE Cancer? Dor William Li tackles this question with interesting new findings science. In the past, the medical world is fixated in finding cures and drugs to heal the body. Dr Li, introduces a new paradigm: using food to cure disease.

Food is basic to life. We take three meals a day. Food introduces new chemicals into our system. Some chemicals are more potent than others. Why then is it impossible to frame food as a medicine?

Dr William Li is a doctor that specializes in Angiogensis. Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels, formed in the earlier stage of vasculogenesis.

The Super Villains of Ourselves

sThe Super Villains of Ourselves

Imagine yourself as Superman, unstoppable, a son of Jor-el. Your dad, the brightest scientist in Krypton encased you in an alien ship and in part 1 you grew up to be powerful.

Then in part 2, 3 Kryptonians broke free from their prison and come to planet earth. They decide that their goal is to find the most painful ways to torture you and give you a hard time.

For many of us this is a real story except that in real life, the 3 super villains are invisible.

Enter the Game of Life
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?” Isaiah 58:6

I thought this passage was really for slave owners and cruel bosses. It still is but after 200 years of human rights and labor laws, there are very few slaves, count with them child abuse, battered women and abused helpers in the middle east. The abuses today are minute compared to the slaves eaten by lions and burn alive in the old days.

The Evolution of the Hamburger

The Evolution of the Hamburger

Visiting our routine restaurant for lunch last Sunday, I happen to take an order before rushing onto our Ushering meeting in the Center. I enthusiastically ordered for a Roli’s Double Decker, famed for its thick layer of premium beef encased with a large portion of bun.

I started to think.

Do you know that the mongols laid the foundation for the discovery of hamburgers? In the 13th Century Genghis Khan went on a conquering spree of Central Asia, they found that there weren’t many animals for meat and short on wood for cooking it. So the Mongols kept meat under their saddles for two reasons: it is an easy way to transport it and banging their bums on it “tenderized” it. 🙂

The mongols were the ones to bring it west to Russia. The mongols minced their meat and was caught by the Russians. This is the reason we have steak tartare. Soon the burger moved westward into Germany through the port of Hamburg which was fondly called the “Russian Port” and Hamburg. There the meat conquered many homes and much stomachs.

The hamburger took its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean through the ships where Germans flee from war torn Europe. Many of the immigrants flocked to New York where they settled and brought with their culinary customs to their new country. In New York, it became knows as a Hamburg-style American fillet. Early American preparations of minced beef were therefore made to fit the tastes of European immigrants, evoking memories of the port of Hamburg and the world they left behind.

As the Americans colonized the Philippines, they too brought their meat loving nature to the pinoys, with one fastfood taking root in the Philippines – Jollibee. In 1981, old Macdonald’s made its way to Manila when it opened the first McDonald’s restaurant in the Philippines.

Come 2015, I have observed the evolution of burgers, which for most part has gotten smaller through the years. When I was young, even though I have less fondness for vegetables, I still prefer my burger with onion, tomatoes, cucumber and mayonnaise. Sadly when I woke up, all I see is a heartbreaking burger with modest ketchup from Jollibee or Mcdonald’s. Today, I delight in this double decker, knowing not all is lost for this food. Then I’m satisfied to move on to my meeting. 🙂

Toastmasters Speech 4: Satiety

Bacolod – Barangay Chapter, Sugarland Hotel, March 28

I will be featuring a speech by a Toastmaster colleague – Michael John Casipe about living healthy. Hope everyone likes it. Ian B.

Last Sunday, I went to La Salle to attend my brother’s graduation. As a tradition, a baccalaureate mass must be held. Well, I can really compare the atmosphere between the baccalaureate mass and graduation. As I walked into the La Salle coliseum for the mass, I can vividly see the vacant seats, more or less 2/3, in the bleachers. Also, the faces of the students were not as colorful as I expect. Well, I’m talking about their makeup for that. But when graduation comes, I can hardly pass through the entrance. I literally squeezed myself amidst the crowd and, with awe; I can see the coliseum filled with the parents, friends and relatives of the graduates.

After the ceremony, the most awaited event is:

EATING.
